The Environmental Impact of AI

Behind every prompt is a physical data center. Here's what AI actually costs the planet — and the levers that determine how heavy that cost is.

Electricity

Every AI request runs on GPUs inside data centers that draw power around the clock. Data centers already use an estimated 1–1.5% of global electricity, and AI is the fastest-growing slice. A single AI text query draws roughly 0.3 watt-hours; generating an image can use ~10× more.

Water

Data centers consume fresh water to cool their servers — and the power plants that feed them use even more. A typical text query evaporates on the order of a few drops (~0.3 mL) on-site, while training a single large model can consume hundreds of thousands of liters.

Carbon

Where that electricity comes from a fossil-heavy grid, it carries emissions — roughly 0.4 kg of CO₂ per kilowatt-hour on a typical mix. The cleaner the grid powering the data center, the lower the carbon cost of every prompt.

Hardware & e-waste

The chips behind AI require energy- and mineral-intensive manufacturing, and they're replaced on a fast cycle. Responsible AI means extracting the most value from every chip-hour rather than burning compute on wasteful workloads.

The good news: training a model is a one-time cost spread across billions of future requests, so the day-to-day footprint of using AI well is overwhelmingly about how efficiently each request is run. Choose lean models, avoid wasted calls, run on cleaner grids — and the impact drops dramatically. That's exactly how SlayCommerce is engineered.

Because we default to efficient AI models and measure every call, the footprint of running an entire store on SlayCommerce is remarkably small. Estimated per active store:

SlayCommerce logs the energy, water, and carbon estimate of every AI request our platform makes — not a one-time guess, but live telemetry. You can't shrink what you don't measure, so transparency comes first.

02 — Reduce

Efficient by design

We default to small, efficient AI models that use a fraction of the energy of frontier models, cache and batch repeated work, and gate heavy image and voice generation behind real intent. Most of our footprint is eliminated before it's ever created.

03 — Offset

Remove more than we use

For the small footprint that remains, we fund verified carbon removal and water restoration through trusted partners — aiming to put back more than we take out, every month.

Offset Pillar 1 — Reforestation

Partnering with One Tree Planted

We've committed to offsetting our carbon footprint through One Tree Planted, a global reforestation nonprofit where every $1 plants one tree. For each new store that joins SlayCommerce — and against our measured monthly carbon estimate — we fund tree planting in forests that need restoration most.

Restoring the Water We Use

Trees address carbon — but AI's hidden cost is water used to cool data centers. So beyond One Tree Planted, SlayCommerce is committing to certified water restoration: funding the return of fresh water to depleted rivers and watersheds, liter for liter against what our AI consumes.

  • We estimate the liters of water our AI consumes each month from our live usage telemetry.
  • We fund the restoration of that volume — and more — to depleted rivers and watersheds through certified Water Restoration partners.
  • Every restored liter is independently verified, so the offset is real and measurable rather than a marketing claim.

Going further: we also prioritize AI infrastructure powered by renewable energy and back our remaining emissions with renewable energy credits — so the electricity behind your store's intelligence gets cleaner over time, not just offset after the fact.
